The Hatfield McCoy TrailFest in West Virginia attracts riders from around the world and has done so ever since the first event in October 2000. Each year, its popularity has grown and this year’s event begins on October 4.
The event takes place over five days and features race quad events, custom quad showpieces, and dirt bikes, along with numerous activities and entertainment throughout the day. The trails have the nickname of ‘trail heaven’ and they are the largest trails on the east coast, spreading out over more than 600 miles and taking riders over mountainous and scenic terrains. The trails are one of the main tourist attractions, with around 30,000 people coming to West Virginia just to see them. Those visiting are able to hire an ATV for the weekend.
Recently, a new quad bike trail has been added, named the ‘Pocahontas Trail’. The 57-mile trail has already proven to be very popular, even though it was only opened in May 2012. There is also a visitors’ centre planned, which should be completed by 2013.
Other trails that make up the event include Bearwallow, Indian Ridge, and Pinnacle Creek. Bearwallow happens to be one of the favourites, as it is an easy route to ride but combines some difficult climbs. It also has some amazing vistas along the way. Pinnacle Creek is another favourite, as it offers plenty of variety and is also within an hour’s reach of some of the best whitewater rafting sites. Indian Ridge, meanwhile, connects with Pinnacle.
