Race ATV event arrives in Weymouth

Spectators turned up in their droves to the Weymouth Beach Race ATV event last weekend. The event was held for the first time and it saw quad bikes, solo bikes and buggies battling it out on the dunes.

It poured with rain on the Saturday but this did not stop the Esplanade being lined up with spectators watching the free event, which helped to raise money for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

The juniors took to the course on the Saturday, with adult race quad riders tackling the larger jumps on faster quad bikes. Thanks to the course being packed with sharp corners, jumps and twists, it has proved to be a large hit with both racers and spectators alike.

Those taking part came from all over the UK. One spectator, 14-year-old Jack Berry from Shaftesbury, said that his favourite part of the event was the racing. Brad and Brett Lewis came down in support of one of their school friends who was taking part in the race.

Locals Denise Newman and her daughter attended the race after seeing it advertised and said the atmosphere was good and that the races were great fun to watch. In the 450 quad novice race, proud mum watched her son Sam on the Sunday and said the event had been well organised.

One organiser said that the race quad weekend had been fantastic and he hoped that each year it would continue to grow until it was as popular as the Lions Beach Motocross, which is held in the seaside town in October.
