We’re used to seeing the police ride around in police cars and vans, and in the old days we’d have seen many local ‘bobbies’ riding around on bikes. Now though, in the 21st century, we’re treated to bobbies on quad bikes – at least in Liverpool.
Liverpool has a lot of parks and open spaces, and patrolling these areas on foot takes a long time. They are also inaccessible for police cars, so local police have now drafted in two mountain bikes, and two Honda quad bikes to keep the areas safe and free from crime.
The areas of Liverpool where you’ll now see police riding past on quad bikes include The Mystery and Otterspool Promenade, Princes Park and Sefton Park. The police will be riding two new Honda 350cc quad bikes, which have been paid for by the Liverpool Housing Trust, the Neighbourhood Management Services, Dane Housing and Citysafe.
The two quad bikes are street legal, and have even been equipped with the ‘blues and twos’ so people know that they’re the police, and not just some quad bike enthusiasts.
Stuart Quirk, speaking on behalf of the police, commented:
Tackling anti-social behaviour is one of the Force priorities and I am confident that the appearance of the quad and mountain bikes will be a welcome sight in the parks and open spaces of Liverpool South. I urge the public to get to know the officers who will be riding the bikes, and tell them of any concerns they have about crime and anti-social behaviour.
The mobility these bikes offer also allows us to be highly visible in these key open spaces, specifically to deter the small minority of people who spoil the rest of the public’s use of parks and open spaces. We will prosecute offenders who use illegal off road bikes and quads, seize them and crush them.
