A bungling criminal was caught when a tracker device fitted to a stolen quad bike led police to his driveway.
The vehicle and trailer were discovered at the front of the home of Aaron Hames, only a few hours after it had been stolen from Ockbrook School.
The quad bike, trailer and equipment was stolen from Ockbrook School in The Settlement. Police then found up to £10,000 of stolen gardening equipment inside Hames’ garden shed after they were granted a warrant to search the property in Green Avenue, Chellaston. Derby Crown Court was told that £3,500 of damage was caused when three burglars ripped tiles from the roof of an outbuilding at the independent school and broke doors to get to the quad bike, trailer and equipment.
Hames, who now lives in Bentley Street, Allenton, pleaded not guilty to burglary but admitted handling stolen goods.
Speaking outside the court room, prosecutor Alex Wolfson said: “He admitted that he knew the goods were stolen but said he had been told he would be paid £200 to look after them.” Mr Wolfson said that the burglary charge against Hames would be dropped. Hames has been bailed on the condition that he lives and sleeps at his home address.
He is due to return to Derby Crown Court to be sentenced on June 17. A spokesman for Derbyshire police said that officers were called to Ockbrook School, in The Settlement, on October 2 last year. Staff reported that the outbuilding had been broken into and the quad bike, trailer and a number of gardening items, including two edge trimmers, two hedge trimmers, a lawnmower, a chainsaw and a drill had been stolen. The spokesman said: “CCTV provided by the school showed three people arrived at the building at 8.50pm the previous evening. “A window was forced open on a school van which was backed up to the building and one of the men climbed on to its roof and then on to the roof of the outbuilding. Tiles were ripped off and the door was forced. “The footage shows them taking items out of the building three times, the last time being when they took a red and black Honda quad bike. “That bike was fitted with a tracker device which led us to an address in Green Avenue, Chellaston.”
Detective Constable Steve Bruce, who investigated the burglary, said: “We are pleased Hames has admitted his part in this crime. All the items were returned to the school, which saved it a huge amount of time and money.” Nobody at the school was available for comment.
Superintendent Gary Parkin, who is in charge of policing in D Division which covers Derby, South Derbyshire and Erewash, said after the hearing: “It is a real problem when thieves target schools.
“In these times of austerity, when public funds and educational funds are tight, the money that schools or local education authorities have to use to replace property that has been stolen or damaged is money that should be used to educate children. “I would ask members of the public if they see anything unusual, especially when schools are closed and on longer holiday breaks, to report it to the police.”
