A Canadian woman has two hunters on quad bikes to thank for her life. Ms Chretien and her husband left Canada and were heading for the popular holiday destination of Las Vegas when they left the main highway to take a more scenic route. However, the hapless couple ended up being stranded in a very remote logging road in some heavy snowdrifts.
Ms Chretien’s husband left the safety of the vehicle to head off in search of help and is sadly still missing. Two hunters, out on their ATVs, found the woman barely conscious in her vehicle and somehow clinging on to life on the 49th day out in the freezing American wilderness. She managed to survive by eating beef jerky and drinking melted snow, marking off the passing days in her journal. Ironically she had marked the rescue day in her journal as being the day she might survive until, or which would be her last day alive. The quad bikes turned up on the exact same day to rescue her. Rescuers are still combing the area for any sign of Mr Chretien.
The nightmare for the couple began when they drove through Oregon and chose to leave the highway near Idaho, which provided a more scenic route. However they took a wrong turn and ended up miles from the highway on a logging road that is rarely used. After three days her husband took the satnav system from the car and set out to reach the state highway, leaving Ms Chretien with a few snacks in the car. She heard the sound of the all terrain vehicles and managed to drag herself out of the car and wave them down.
She is recovering in hospital.
