Thanks to the weather holding out, crowds in excess of 50,000 visited the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show over the weekend of 12th – 13th May 2012. One of the highlights was the Smyth`s Adrenaline Tour motorcycle and stunt display, which gave performances on both days of the show.

This was the 129th show, with the event continuing to grow in popularity year after year. As always, the main ring which held the motorbike and quad stunt show was packed, being the main attraction. Along with the quad bikes stunt team, J.C. Balls Dancing Diggers was also a huge hit.

Another traditional event at the show was the Grand Parade, which saw champion livestock parading around on the Sunday. Entrants to the show have grown each year and in the horse class entries have doubled over the last three years. In the heavy horse category there were 120 horses entered, whilst in the show jumping category 1,200 plus participants took part with their horses. The show jumping attracted a large crowd on the Sunday thanks to the Mattie Brown Stakes, with the lucky winner taking a prize fund of £10,000.

There was fun for the youngers by way of a fairground and water balloons, with competitions held including floral and farrier, chainsaw carvings and the shearing of sheep. As always, there was plenty of food available courtesy of the many food halls and other events, including the Blankney and South Notts hunts and the heavy horses.

Highland Activities has teamed up with Bogbain Farm in Inverness for the 2012 season which it is hoped will be a huge hit. Highland Activities is well known for its outdoor adventures and it plans on expanding and continuing to offer a large range of outdoor activities, one of which is quad bike riding at the farm.

The farm is located not far from the city of Inverness. It is one of the best places to visit for a day out and one of the largest places in Scotland for top outdoor sports. Anyone who enjoys thrills and spills guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping will enjoy all the farm has to offer. Just a short five minute drive from the city, the farm overlooks the Kessock Bridge and Moray Firth. For 2012, they plan to run some of the most popular activities offered by Highland Activities.

One of the most popular of these is quad biking around a very challenging course and riding over some of the muddiest and bumpiest terrain. Another firm favourite is clay pigeon shooting, with sessions being run by enthusiastic instructors. Other sports on offer at the farm include paintballing and archery. The qualified staff are a bunch of individuals who like fun and are able to offer youngsters and their families a great day out.

Along with sporting activities and quad bike tracks, the farm provides barbeques along with three course dining and adults can also enjoy the whiskey bar. Inverness is of course the home of the famous Whiskey Festival. Bogbain Farm has its own beer garden which serves international beer.

Highland Adventure has always offered adults and children memorable days out whether white water rafting is on the menu, quad biking or mountain biking. The new activity centre in Inverness is another expansion into fun for holidays, short breaks and parties.

Farmers Weekly recently reported that security has improved for tractors. However, the bad news is that theft of quad bikes and fuel is on the increase. Over the last twelve months quad bike theft has increased by more than 150%. It seems that ATVs have now surpassed tractors as the most wanted vehicle for thieves in rural areas.

A spokesman for NFU Mutal, the insurance company, has said that farmers have improved security on their tractors and this seems to have acted as a deterrent to thieves. However, thieves are not being deterred altogether as they are now turning to quad bikes, which are typically easier to steal. Thieves have probably reached the conclusion that larger equipment will have more security devices attached to it. At the moment not many farmers use tracker systems and advanced security measures to guard their farm quads. This can make them a much easier target.

On the positive side, early indications show that the crime statistics for this year are less than previous years and the total amount of thefts has also dropped by around 10%. This is yet another indication that thieves are steering clear of the larger, higher value and better protected vehicles like tractors, with the focus now being on farm quad bikes which are more vulnerable. Fuel theft has also been on the rise and this has caused a dramatic rise in claims for diesel. Red diesel is essential on farms and when the cost goes up so does the amount of thefts reported.

Farmers in rural regions who rely on their ATVs may wish to consider making sure that adequate security measures are in place to protect their quad bikes. Paying out for additional security measures may mean spending money, but it could be a lot less than having to replace a quad bike and managing without it until a replacement is found.

New technology from Road Angel, the automotive technology company, can help owners of stolen quad bikes and motorbikes to track their vehicles down. Along with helping to recover stolen vehicles, it also doubles as a monitor for productivity and safety.

Road Angel originally developed the technology for motorbikes but it could be invaluable for owners of quad bikes too. The theft of ATVs, especially farm quads and custom quads, is on the rise. Farmers rely on their ATVs for getting around the farm but are a target for thieves due to the rural areas they live in. The technology would allow owners of stolen bikes to track them down online through a web portal.

Additionally, when the quad or bike is moved unlawfully, the unit attached to the machine would send a text message or email to the owner telling them that their vehicle had been moved. The clever software inside the unit also leaves a trail that can be followed online, allowing the police to track the stolen vehicle’s location.

The technology can be used to monitor the use of satellite mapping and gives owners the chance to keep tabs on a variety of statistics such as the level of the battery and miles being driven. To keep a close eye on your quad you would have to pay for the equipment and then take out a subscription for the monitoring. While the outlay may seem like an extra expense that you could do without, it could pay for itself if you become a victim of quad bike theft.

Clowns and magicians have always been the ‘in’ thing for children’s parties but this has now changed thanks to a small family business launched in 1994.

Quadraphoenia Childrens Quad Bike Parties is a totally new and very popular concept for keeping children entertained.

The countryside in the heart of Cheshire is the base for the business and it took a great deal of planning and advice from specialists to design the tracks for the course. This rather unusual concept did not go down very well at first but it soon caught on. The children’s parties became very popular, with more and more bookings being taken for the full quad bike party package.

One of the main problems with the idea was how to offer catering out in the middle of a field and quad bike tracks. At first the company used a large caravan, which seemed ideal until they were told it had to go by the local council. This was then followed by a portakabin which became home to hundreds of birthday parties.

Due to the success of the business, planning was sought and the council gave permission for the building of a party palace along with a deck for parents and spectators with plenty of storage for the race quads. The business has gone from strength to strength and new quad bikes have been purchased over time to accommodate the ever growing demand for quad bike parties. Parties are booked from all over the UK and even the rich and famous have held quad bike parties for their children at Quadraphoenia.

A police officer in the USA who was wounded in the line of duty has for the first time since he was shot got back on a quad bike. The officer has been undergoing rehabilitation since the summer of 2010 using a wheelchair and on the odd occasion a walker. His aim was to once again get back into the seat of his quad.

Kuzak has always had a passion for ATVs and had been riding for more than a decade when the shooting put an end to his hobby. He managed to get back on a quad bike thanks to the combined efforts of UPMC Sports Medicine and Mines and Meadows, who set up a plan to help spinal cord patients get back to enjoying riding quads at the RV and ATV resort.

Kuzak was told about the organisation more than a year ago and focused all his efforts into getting fit enough to launch the first outing. He said that summer could not come quick enough and he was happy to be back on a quad. Now Kuzak cannot wait to get back to doing what he loves, riding a race quad over rougher terrain and being more daring. A safety instructor helped by giving a refresher course before Kuzak headed off onto a woods trail.

The ATV Kuzak was riding had the accelerator and brakes on the handlebars and Kuzak has gained enough upper body strength to be able to ride the quad without it having to be adapted. Thankfully, Kuzak’s skills in riding were still there and he recommended the program to anyone who has suffered a spinal cord injury and wants to get back onto a quad bike. Under the watchful eye of his trainer he first mastered some figure eights on the flat and turns before then heading out into woodland in search of a bumpy trail and mud.

The American company Polaris claims to have developed what is one of the hardest working quad bikes that provides a smooth ride in the form of the Sportsman Touring 850 H.O. However, would it make a good farm quad or utility ATV? What about a race quad?

The revised model for 2012 features increased performance and comes with an airbox and throttle body that have been totally revised. In regards to acceleration there is a 20% increase. This makes it very responsive, which is necessary given the fact that the ATV is almost 800 pounds with a wide girth. The Sportsman has what is termed Active Descent Control, which when travelling downhill at low speeds helps the rider to keep control as the front wheels lock to the rear ones.

Riders are able to select on demand true all-wheel drive and when this is chosen the front wheels come into play if any slippage is noticed on the rear wheels. Being on demand, this means that you are able to benefit from light steering effort as the front drive train only comes into play when needed if the rear wheels slip. The on demand true all-wheel drive is seen at its best when driving the quad through a mud hole. The system allows both of the front wheels to engage and as soon as traction is felt again the front wheels are disengaged automatically.

Polaris is a well-known name in farm quads, so the Sportsman Touring may be the answer to those steep, rugged and slippery hillsides around the farm.

The race sees classes including bike, race quads, trucks and autos taking part in a 14 day off-road event that is one of the most exciting in the world.

The rally started off in Mar del Plata, which is just on the outskirts of the Atlantic coastal city in Argentina, and came to its conclusion more than 5,157 miles or 8300 kilometers later on the Pacific coast of Peru in Lima. Competitors of the endurance race call it one of the hardest races and only three of the teams out of the twelve that started from the United States managed to finish the race.

One of the most well-known US racers to take part in the Daker Rally was the legendary biker and racer Johnny Campbell, who was co-driver in a Hummer H3. One of the biggest surprises in the race this year was the fact that the biggest rival to the race was a Mini car and there was more than one of them at the starting line. However, the Hummer H3 came out on top of the minis by over twenty minutes.

In the quad class race, there was hot competition from two siblings who love to take their race quads through the paces. Alejandro Patronelli was the defending champion and he took the first place in the quad class with his Raptor 700 Yamaha. His brother Marcos followed close behind in second place with his identical race quad bike.

Insurance can therefore become a hassle for quad bike riders, including insurance for farm quads.

To find suitable insurance you may wish to check out a specialist provider. Looking for cover for your quad with your car insurance provider may not be worth the hassle. One of the reasons why general high street insurance providers do no offer insurance is down to the fact that there are so many different types of quad bike for different things. You may be able to get a typical third party fire and theft policy for your ATV or farm quad, but what if you want more comprehensive insurance, such as protection for a breakdown of your quad, cover for accessories or you wish to have legal expenses covered? A specialist quad bike insurance company may be the only place to get all the insurance coverage you need.

Even when taking out insurance for your quad with a specialist it pays to check out the terms and conditions. Almost all insurance providers will require you to keep your quad bike under lock and key and they may also require the use of a chain and lock. Some may even ask that you have a tracking device installed on your quad bike. As your quad is a large investment and, when purchasing a farm quad it is generally a much needed piece of equipment, it pays to have adequate insurance.

The motocross quad season starts in April in Australia in NSW with the national round, and this year there is a brand new format. The Pro Quads will cover two rounds, which include the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals along with the end of the Australian Quad Motocross Championships.

The opening ride already has 15 entrants and the season promises to be a good one thanks to the fact that 75% of the grid is already full. Six competitors will take part in the Western Australia race, which will see them ride across Australia making their way to the East Coast.

One of the race ATV contestants is Luke Gaisford, who is the current Australian Quad MX Champion. Gaisford was on excellent form during the last two seasons. In the National, along with the Western Australian Series, Gaisford wears the number one plate and is head of the 4TEEN brand name.

Jordan Dummet is number two again in both the National and Western Australian Championships and has made a great name for himself in the South West Championship races.

Although in his rookie year as a pro rider Joel Mortimer, during the intermediate class 2011 championships, proved he has what it takes when he came in second place with lap times to rival many of the professional racers. Ryan Lancaster is looking to do better than the second place he took in the 2011 Pro Series while Josh McKay, who is seeded three in Western Australia, is taking part. Jye Stokes, originally from Tasmania, is racing and is one of only very few to have taken a title in a Pro Race at the national level.
